A big thank you to Steve Chambers, who sent in these photo's of his lovely 1955 "Gripmeur" model.

James Fothergill was one of Liverpool's largest and most respected frame makers from the 1930's till the late 1980's. During that period he had a large shop based in Smithdown Road, Liverpool, later moving to Wavertree Road. Before the advent of affordable cars for the general population, Fothergill's were producing a large amount of bicycles during the post-war years- at one time employing up to four frame builders, who also built frames for shop's in the local area.

  1. The late Bob Dawson, enamelers off dock road Liverpool, told me he also painted frames for Fothergill (this was in the 1970,s on one occasion i saw a large number of frames awaiting paint ing, he could also do an excellent job,and charged around £15 for a quality job at the time. As has been previously said,Fo thergill, also made frames for other local cycle shops, including Alec Green ,Oxton Road Birkenhead,i purchased a lightly used Alec Green in 1958,my first decent bike which i rated highly. Does anyone remember the stunning Fothergills, which used to turn up at the Eureka cafe {two mills} around 1960,often painted a lime green with elaborate lugs picked out in red,i thought they were stunning, and they made a lasting impression {so where the Hill Specials} For the record i have just purchased a Fothergill frame, restored but very plain so probably a base model,i would love an Alec Green frame or complete cycle,if any available. Love the site Mike
